Hello everyone,

First up, may I say that is really good to have something like this for lovers of fine French cars in Australia, we're rare mob in this country.

Anyway I've got a 96 Laguna V6 which as you know only came in auto. Recently the automatic transmission starting to make the car go really slow when I take off from a standing start, I have to put the pedal right down to get any descent speed, mind you once it's up and running it's fine. Also if I turn off the engine and back on after about 5-15 minutes (it seems depending on the tempreture of the day) it's fine and takes off from a standing start just fine.

I know it can't be good for it so I'm asking if there are any good people who know how to fix Mid-90's Renault Laguna's automatic transmission.

I live in Canberra but would be more then willing to take it up to Sydney or even Melbourne if I have to.

Any help would be greatly apprecitated

Check your dashboard and see if the Service light is on. Also, ask the voice computer if anything is wrong when the transmission is doing this.

Sounds like it's in "limp home" mode. Get it to a dealer, it could be as simple as a bad electrical connection.

You want to get it checked reasonably quickly, as the trans will be wearing out quite quickly if it's starting in a higher gear - probably should get the oil changed at the same time (even if the fault is an easy electrical issue)

Europa is right - i think. Yes, it might only be a connection problem or oil in the multifunction switch. a solanoid could have called it quits. The sad thing is that they will change the whole pack. If they do, ask for the old one back as they can be changed individually (but not sold individually). If the setup is like on the R19 the resistance in most of the solanoids is 55 to 65 ohms. It's also the same on the V6 VW of that vintage.
Don't know if your multi function switch is the save as on the R19. But what i'v e done is drill a small hole in the switch between the contacts and clean it out with contact cleaner and air. Been sucked in to buy a new one before.

Dealers can plug the unit into a diagnostic computer (Clip) and run full diagnostic tests, and also read and recorded fault codes. The laguna service manual devotes a whole section to it.

Yeah, give the Canberra dealer or one of the local repairers a call, other than that.. in Sydney you have more dealers and people like David Collier. I know Dave does a lot of auto work on 19s, probably Lagunas of the same vintage too.

Don’t bother with the dealers they don’t know nothing about these 1990’s Renaults… resetting the computer was a task too hard on my dads Laguna… I suggest you find a good mechanic that know very well about these cars… if you lived in Sydney David Collier is the best, got the Renault Laguna back today from a service… there was also a Gold V6 Laguna with Canberra registration there also… :)

You have the same transmission as I – the AD8 which is an VW golf VR6 box.

First you have to know in which gear do you have engaged when this occur. When you pass the 70-73km/h it should go in 4-th if it isn't the limp. Or you can choose the 1.st gear on the gearstick – if the 1.st doesn't engage and alo the 4th you can be pretty sure it's the limp mode. But the fault warning light should also illuminate when you pass the 20km/h speed.

There are many reasons why you can have the limp mode. It could be also battery voltage, temp sensor, pressure sensor, speed sensors, multifunction switch,…

To see what's going on the XR25 diagnostic case is needed.
Also do you have enough oil? (do you know how to check?)

I've had a bad connection in the connector that connects injection with auto control units.
It is located near the filling opening in the front of the transmission. It has 15 pins – i think 6 of them is occupied.
Perhaps check that one. With mine the problem was on the upper part.

Report when you have the XR25 connected.
I'm very interested what is happening.

The Adelaide dealer services my Dad's 95 Laguna quite successfully. To diagnose the fault you WILL need the correct test equipment, if you choose a third party, be sure they have access to either the genuine Renault gear or alternative. Even changing the oil in the auto requires diagnostic equipment, beware of dealers who say otherwise!

Thanks everyone, the info you have provided is very invaluable.

I think Blaz JE has nail it, It does indeed go into Limp mode when I start it up and yes the service light comes on, but like I said earlier, after I turn off the car after about five minutes it's fine.

I've found a good bloke here in Canberra, Alpine Moters, who say they have the diagnostic equipement but said they not really good with Transmissions but will take it in to get dianose anyway.

Also Does anyone have a number for Dave Collier

Colliers Automotive

It's almost on the corner of Parramatta Rd and James Ruse Dr, but you have to approach it from the Rosehill direction heading towards Parramatta Rd (north to south) to make it easier.

David has the Renault Diagnostic gear and often helps the local Renault dealer out when they can't get a car going!

He owns a laguna himself of that vintage and as people have said, services lots of them.

If you'd like i can send you an renault .pdf document on diagnosticing the gearbox.
You should first tell me how the connection on the gearbox computer looks.
(if there's only one big connector or there are several (i think 5) smaller connectors)
Or you can give me the complete mark of the transmission (e.g. AD8 005)and the car (VF…).

One is ca 70 pages 800kB, and the other ca 100 pages 1,5MB.
You can get it on monday (or if you are quick you can have it today-you have 2 hours time), don't forget to post an e-mail adress ;-))
Bye
